Where to stay in Berlin? Our hotel tips per district

Where to stay in Berlin? We show you our hotel tips and the best districts to stay in Berlin.

Are you planning a trip to Berlin and don't know where to stay? Then read our hotel tips for Berlin, because for sightseeing you should choose a central location, which not every Berlin district offers. We show you which district and which hotel we would recommend.

As I travel to Berlin several times a year, I have already tested all the accommodation mentioned here myself. At the end you will find further recommendations that I would like to test. Of course, the accommodations are all ideally located for sightseeing and ideally close to good restaurants, cafés and bars. If you are in Berlin for the first time, you should limit your search to the districts of Berlin-Mitte, Friedrichshain, Charlottenburg and Prenzlauer Berg.

Kreuzberg or Neukölln are more interesting for repeat visitors as they do not offer the typical sights.

Places to stay in Berlin

There are numerous options for good (and cheap) accommodation in Berlin:

  • Flats of Berliners who travel a lot and rent out their flats on Airbnb or FeWo Direkt (I like it because then there is also a kitchen and living room).

  • Hotels in every price category from cheap to luxurious.

  • Hostels with single rooms and dormitories

Especially nice hotels in central locations

If you're travelling to Berlin for the first time, you're probably wondering in which district of Berlin you should look for a hotel, right?

The first thing you need to know is that Berlin doesn't have a "real centre" like other cities! There are only well-located corners that are hubs of the S-Bahn and U-Bahn. And since Berlin is of course quite big, the location within the Ringbahn is ideal:

25hours Hotel Bikini Berlin

In my opinion, the perfect hotel for your first visit to Berlin is the 25hours Bikini Hotel Berlin. The hotel is ideally located for sightseeing. From here you can quickly get to many of the places worth seeing in BerlinWhether on foot, by underground or with the bicycles provided free of charge by the hotel.

The rooms are spacious, but if you are travelling with friends or acquaintances, you need to know that the bathroom is open to the bedroom.

Depending on the location of the room, you also have a great view of the city or Berlin Zoo from the large glass front. The adjoining restaurant offers a great breakfast. The food at NENI is no longer to everyone's taste, although it used to be very good. The roof-top bar "Monkey Bar" is also quite popular with hipsters in Berlin. It is located on the top floor. Normal guests have to wait in the long queue, you as a hotel guest have direct access from inside the hotel.

The hotel is not cheap, but it is a particularly nice one.

Good value: Pension Classic

If you want to discover the "old west" of the city, this pension is perfect. It is located directly between Ku'damm, KaDeWe and Zoologischer Garten, in a classic Berlin old building, so the name fits. Breakfast buffet.

Stay overnight in Friedrichshain

Michelberger Hotel

A great counterpart to the 25h Hotel in the "west" of the city, is the Michelberger Hotel in Friedrichshain. Only cheaper. Vintage meets modern minimalism, you might think. The rooms are functional but chic. The inner courtyard with garden furniture and picnic tables is actually always well filled. The restaurant is really good and recommendable. And they pay attention to healthy ingredients, which is also nice if you might have a sin or two during the day.

I was once a guest at this hotel for a trade fair. We had a room for 4 people (you can see the bunk beds in the pictures). The location is really great, as it is directly connected to the underground, the S-Bahn and the tram and within walking distance of many great places in Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg. Since a friend recently moved in just 2 streets away, I tend to stay at his place rather than the hotel.

????Almodóvar Hotel - Germany's first organic hotel

The hotel was named after the Spanish actor Pedro Almodóvar. The hotel is committed to ethical values such as sustainability. The associated restaurant Bardot's Bio Deli offers tapas, delicious salads and organic wines, vegetarian-vegan of course.

The SPA on the roof is particularly cool. Take a look at the hotel. The prices are surprisingly reasonable compared to the 25h. If you are concerned about sustainability, you should definitely book this hotel.

Hotel tips for Berlin-Mitte

Motel One at the Alex

The cheapest accommodation for a first visit are definitely the Motel One hotels. I like these accommodations because they are always available in a great location at a reasonable price. However, they are also very popular and quickly booked up. Therefore, be sure to book early!

Important: Motel One hostels do not include breakfast. Which I think is a great thing. Instead of having the same hotel breakfast several times, I like to try out different cafés! Because: In Berlin, you can find very tasty breakfasts everywhere. Whether in Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg, Neukölln, Friedrichshain or Kreuzberg. (I'm deliberately only mentioning the districts within the Ringbahn).

If you're not visiting friends or relatives in Berlin (and are looking for accommodation near them), you'll be staying in one of these neighbourhoods.

My personal favourite is the Motel One at Alexanderplatz. It's only three S-Bahn stops from Berlin Central Station to Alexanderplatz. Then it's a 3 minute walk to the hotel. The rooms are modern and comfortably furnished. The shower is spacious and at ground level.

Tip: Ask for a room on one of the upper floors. The view is great!

Note if you are travelling by car: There is a public parking garage right next to the hotel(Rathaus Passage). You pay 12 euros for 24 hours. This is quite reasonable for this location.

Other Motel One hotels in Berlin are located in the following areas of Berlin:

  • Central Station

  • Alexanderplatz

  • Ku'damm

  • Upper West

  • Potsdamer Square

  • Hackescher Market

The Circus Hostel

The Circus Hostel in Berlin-Mitte is really well located if you want to explore not only sightseeing but also nightlife.

The accommodation is cheap, nicely furnished and there are even single rooms.

By the way, the Circus also has a hotel and flats if you prefer it quieter (as I do now).

Generator Hostel

Located in the former hot spot for great cafés and bars. Clean, well-equipped and reasonably priced. If you're on a budget, you'll love Generator Hostel.

I hardly ever share dorms anymore (if it's avoidable, I always book private rooms).

Pension Mädchenkammer, Mitte

Right in the middle of Mitte, right between Hackesche Höfe and Museum Island on one side and Kulturbrauerei and Mauerpark on the other, just perfectly located to explore the larger city centre. With quiet green courtyard located in a nice little side street.

Stay in Prenzlauer Berg

Pfefferbett Hostel

Super nice hostel, great location, nice staff, great atmosphere and for me definitely the best hostel in Berlin! By the way, the hostel is part of the Pfefferberg industrial monument. The former brewery in Schönhauser Allee was built in the mid-19th century and is now a cultural centre.

The transport links are great, with the "Senefelder Platz" underground station (U2) just around the corner. Alexander Platz is also only two underground stops away.

The Hackesche Höfe can be reached on foot in 15 minutes, the Museum Island in about 20 minutes. The Alex, the TV tower and Alexanderplatz are also 20 minutes away on foot.

Since the Pfefferbett Hostel is very popular and word of its good reputation has spread, you should book early as all rooms are usually fully booked. Breakfast is exclusive, super tasty, but more expensive. Since we mostly ate breakfast in our favourite Berlin cafés, this "without breakfast" solution was the best. We had the 4-person dorm for three, with private bathroom.

H+ Hotel HVD 4Youth at Mauerpark

The H+ Hotel HVD 4Youth is located right next to Mauerpark in Berlin Mitte and is actually on the former border strip of the Berlin Wall, just opposite the famous Mauerpark. The hotel is kept very simple and the breakfast is ok and sufficient. The staff is very friendly and the rooms are clean.

Since you are usually only in the room to sleep on a city trip, this hotel is perfectly adequate. The price-performance ratio is absolutely right here.

The Hotel4youth is only 400 metres from the Bernauer Straße underground station (U8) and directly opposite the Wolliner Straße tram stop (M10). The Eberswalder Straße (U2) is about 700 m away.

Old Town Hostel

The Old Town Hostel (formerly Aurora Hostel) is located in Pappelallee. The rooms are super cheap and also very spartanly furnished, but clean. The bathroom and shower are in the corridor. The staff was very friendly. There is no breakfast here, but lots of bakeries, supermarkets and small cafés and restaurants ("Kreuzburger", Vietnamese...) right around the corner. The underground station "Eberswalder Straße" is close by, as is Kastanienallee (also called "Casting-Allee").

There is also a nice common room with TV, sofas, books and table football, but we never used it.
Important: If you come after 10 pm, you have to remember the entry code...we almost forgot it ;-).
Price-performance ratio is ok, but for me it's no longer on the shortlist, as I prefer to pay a few euros more per night and have my own bathroom.

Pension Parlamento

This pension is located in the middle of the quieter northern part of Prenzlauer Berg, and at the same time very close to Schönhauser Allee, Helmholtzkiez and Mauerpark. Vintage charm and old paintings give the pension some personal flair. There is a shared kitchen and kettles in the rooms.

Pension Absolut Berlin

Scandinavian minimalism meets modern cosiness. In an old building within walking distance of Mauerpark and Schönhauser Allee. Also offer fully equipped flats around the corner.
