During the Vietnam War, a staggering total of 8,165,491 gallons of pesticides were used in South Vietnam alone. The use of these pesticides was divided into different quadrants, with I Corps, II Corps, III Corps, and IV Corps each having their designated areas of operation.

South Vietnam Quadrants

I Corps - 2,355,322 gallons

The I Corps area, which included locations such as A Shau, An Hoa, Cam Lo, Camp Carroll, and Chu Lai, saw the use of over 2 million gallons of pesticides. These chemicals were used to defoliate forests and destroy crops, impacting both the enemy and the civilian population.

II Corps - 1,054,406 gallons

In the II Corps area, which encompassed locations like An Khe, Ben Het, Dak To, and Pleiku, over 1 million gallons of pesticides were used. These herbicides were employed to clear vegetation and create clear lines of sight for military operations.

III Corps - 4,086,229 gallons

In the III Corps area, which included locations like Cu Chi, Long Binh, Phu Loi, and Saigon, a staggering 4 million gallons of pesticides were used. The heavy use of herbicides in this area aimed to remove potential hiding spots and food sources for the enemy.

IV Corps - 669,534 gallons

The IV Corps area, which consisted of locations such as Ben Luc, Can Tho, and Vinh Long, witnessed the use of over 600,000 gallons of pesticides. These chemicals were dispersed to eliminate vegetation and disrupt the enemy's supply lines.

Description and Amounts of Pesticides

The pesticides used during the Vietnam War contained various toxic substances. Agent Orange, the most infamous of these pesticides, had a TCDD (Dioxin) concentration ranging from 1.77 to 40 parts per million (ppm). Other chemicals, such as Agent Blue, Agent Red, Agent White, and Silvex, also contained significant amounts of toxic compounds.
